    One question concerning the 62 gr ELD-VT bullets. Because of the very long boattail, when loaded to AR magazine limitations (2.260") they only contact approximately .025" of the very front of the necks of the 22 ARC. Wouldn't that be a concern regarding bullet alignment?

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 2 дня назад

      I would have to beg to differ with you if given the choice between a flyswatter and a full cylinder of 45 Colt snake shot I would choose the snake shot every single time. The snake in the intro photo is one that I shot with these loads at 15 feet. It was dead in one shot and wasn't even writhing around in typical dead snake fashion. While certain loadings of snake shot are not very effective I assure you these do work well with the right load at the right distance as displayed in this video. Currently my sample size for the number 12 shot is somewhere around 50 snakes most of them killed with a single shot all ranging from 5 1/2 feet to less than 1 foot. Plus loading your own snake shot is only slightly more money than handloading standard cartridges in 45 Colt. At any rate though I still respect your opinion and appreciate you taking the time to share it and watch the video as well. --Jeremiah

It was a Wildcat for about 20 years. It has spent most of its life as a commercial cartridge. And btw, reading a script, and wearing that hat, is not doing you any favors...42 seconds in and I'm already hitting the eject button...CIAO* 👎👎

I am not perfect, but I am not going to stop wearing the hat, as for Nosler rifles if you would have finished the video you would find that this one shot quite well and even stabilized bullets up to the 62 grain mark. We do strive to improve our videos though so we certainly will take your feedback into advisement this video was also published 4 years ago I would encourage you to check out some of our newer videos. Both the use of a bullet and gas check seem a little extreme why not wad essentially you have bbuck and ball. Have you tried wad over the shot. For clays it works for me

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 3 дня назад

      It probably is a little excessive for some situations but for situations on horseback where I may need to dispatch a snake or a coyote it allows me to not have to rotate the cylinder to an appropriate load. Sometimes time is of the essence in those types of situations. I have tried a wad over the shot and it works just as well as the gas check and is a viable alternative. We would've showcased that in the video but sadly we did not have enough time to showcase all 3 different loadings. By all means use what works best for your application a wad/gas check and shot may be all you need. That is generally all that is kept in gun when i'm working around the house or the barn but on horseback I carry the shot W/ bullet load. In addition to that each person can tailor the load to their needs by using our data and substituting the gas check for a wad or whatever would suit your application. Hopefully they'll have a lot of fun in the process. As the for the compliment thank you very much! It is easier than it looks with a 45 colt case packed full of shot! No offense taken, we report the results exactly as we get them and the viewer can take that information and do with as they please. We don't pull any punches or show favoritism in our videos nor do we cater to advertisers or anything like that. I am actually working on the part two of the article for Handloader magazine on this rifle and cartridge combination. I shot a 30 Shot group with Vihtavuori N540 that measured out to .88 inches, I wish I could have showed that target and shooting in this video but sadly it was shot after filming was complete. I thought that was pretty good and it can be misleading shooting only five shot groups but everyone has their own thoughts and ideas on that and that is perfectly okay as well. I am pretty happy with it for what it was intended for a 500 yard and in coyote rifle, if I do my part that should be no problem accuracy or ballistics wise. It does outperform the 5.56 NATO I was previously using for coyotes but by all means to each their own. Thank you for being kind with your comment and sharing your thoughts here I think it adds a lot of value to our videos and opens up room for more discussion amongst those who are interested in the video topic. All these bad reviews are sad, and hopefully not a bunch of BS from competitors. I bought a Remington 788 in 22-250 back in the early 70’s. The rifle out shot Remington’s flagship 700, but although the action and barrel performed exceptionally the cheap “hardwood” stock sucked. The rifle has a free floating barrel and even though I never had it out in the rain and do not have excess humidity in my area, the stock warped a bit after a few decades. It was no longer free floating. I had a great rifle with a crap stock and spend years seeking a replacement but because the model was discontinued (due to its outselling the 700), no one was making a stock for it. However, because benchrest shooters had long since realized the great action of this $99.00 special I eventually found a BOYD’s stock to fit it. The price was reasonable and I bought it on line as a Christmas gift to myself. It is laminated so it shouldn’t warp! It’s gorgeous in the natural wood shades I chose and the free float is clear enough to slide a few dollar bills from the muzzle clean up to the action! Their stock is the savior of my much loved chuck gun that I used to nail upstate NY chucks from 300 plus yds. Without trying very hard. GK

    Late to the party but first time RUclips referenced your channel. I'm busted up pretty bad and full of shrapnel. My body doesn't care for heavy recoil but I'm looking at 7mm Remington Magnum, 7 prc, 6.5 prc and the dark horse 6.8 Western, (components and factory ammo especially in my area for the 6.8). I have owned lot's of different cartridges with the exception of those listed. I handload for .223, .243 Winchester, 6.5 needmore and .308 Win. My thinking is maybe a trip for elk or bear sometime. I shoot the 6.5 creed and 308 to 1000 yards pretty regular and 1500 less often. If I were to make that trip I would like a little more getty-up and distance than the .308 Win. Out of those I mentioned, recoil, availability of reloading components and factory ammo in the decision, the 6.5 prc and 7mm Rem Mag with a good break or can seems to be best choice. From a factory rifle which would be your choice? Here in the Bluegrass state the .243 is very versatile as is the 308 and 6.5 creed. So this would be a lighter weight setup most likely.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 2 дня назад

      It is hard to go wrong with a 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm PRC for Elk, the 6.8 should be more than capable as well and if you have access to the components you shouldn't have a problem with that either with the right bullet at the right range. 6.5 PRC is capable as well but it would likely be last on my personal recommendations for elk of the cartridges you listed. I agree with a good muzzle brake you can get the recoil of 7mm Rem Mag down to that of a 6.5 Creedmoor. As for a rifle recommendation that is a tough one Tikka is popular, Bergara is another good choice, the Winchester Model 70 is a classic and they are slick actions these days. If I had to choose personally and not go the custom route I would probably pick a Tikka or Winchester Model 70 if money was no objection. Then I would shoot the heck out of it and know what it is truly capable of. That would be my best suggestion. Whatever you pick practice with it, know your cone of fire and maximum effective range with a little margin for error added in. If you are really concerned about weight of the rifle the Howa Carbon Elevate may be a great option with a large brake added to offset the added recoil from a light rifle or a really good suppressor but it sill won't be quite as effective as a brake. Great question thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

    Are the 6.5 Grendel cases you necked down previously fired, or virgin brass? Is it possible to neck down once fired cases? Would annealing help?

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV 2 дня назад

      They were virgin Lapua cases, Annealing would certainly help with necking them down but I would not recommend it for virgin cases I feel it may make them a little too soft and you wouldn't work it enough through sizing to get that hardness back until you've fired it a few times. I could be wrong there though. In my experience once fired cases are even harder and crush even easier than virgin cases. I think the best advice is what is shown in the video using a 6mm ARC or 6mm Grendel die to size the neck down then full length size down to 22 ARC. You'll work your brass less doing so and it'll still shoot well on the first firing. Great question though, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

      It is a Konig Jager Super Bench made out of Aluminum plate (not sure what alloy) and welded together with adjustable legs in a sliding sleeve with a locking pinch type collar on the legs. It is very heavy but great for benchrest type shooting I do wish it was a little bigger. Building one shouldn't be too difficult if your a good welder otherwise I would suggest a different design. Sadly Konig Jager is out of business but you may be able to find some better pictures online of the bench itself. Overall it is a pretty simple design the hardest part would be getting the top which is one piece rolled down to create the approx. 3 inch lip that runs all around the bench so you have something to lean into and attempt to remove your breathing and heartbeat from going into the rifle. If that is a concern I would also suggest a different shape making it easier to get up and lean into the bench but all in all it was one of the best on the market. Thanks for watching! --Jeremiah

I realize that portable AND rock solid might not necessarily be a realistic possibility . During my search I came across the Stukey bench , and It looks absolutely perfect , you can tell a lot of effort went into the design of that base and leg system . Unfortunately with the price of electricity , food , gas and just about everything else doubled and tripled : I would be in big trouble with the powers to be if UPS pulled up and dropped that off on my porch . Those shots aren't flyers. They are part of the group. Your shooting was fine, and your rifle/ammo isn't as accurate as you think it is. If you fired at the same point of aim for 15 more shots(with breaks every 5 shots for the barrel to cool, the group would be likely around 3/4 inch to 1 inch. 5 shots groups are not statistically relevant. 20 shot groups are statistically relevant.

      I agree with you which is why we show both group measurements in the video. That particular rifle will put 35 rounds into a little less than an inch depending on conditions which is pretty amazing in my book! However, your absolutely right about 5 shots not being statistically significant and better yet it sounds like you have done your own testing to validate your statement. It's good to hear that other folks are starting to understand such things. We have plans to do a video on the subject along with load development explaining exactly how we do it for the videos along with how I do it personally. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

    Excellent example pf why a 260 Remington can be your Go-to rifle. Mine is a Tikka T3, i hate the magazine because you cannot go past 2.78” setting your bullets, having said that, 140 Sierra boat tales will cloverleaf, most Hornadys under an inch. The worst were factory loads. H4831 and H4350 are my best powders, then IMR 7828, 4350, and lastly but still not terrible is Varget. My difficulty is the rifle is my most accurate at the range over sandbags but in the field, it it toolight and wobbly for offhand shooting. I have gone back to my Remington 700 BDL which is a 270, same bullet weights, but easier to shoot well in the field, if you can stand lugging it around all day.

    First did this back in the mid to late 80’s from a Mike Venturino article. I found it more effective than the commercial snake shot. I used 8 grains of unique.

      I must admit Mike was definitely the inspiration behind this and the shot size selection as well! They work wonderfully well and have saved my horse and dog from danger close death noodles. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

    No coyote gun like the 220 Swift. Yes, I know, the coyotes don't know the difference.

      I have a 220 Swift from the Remington Custom Shop and actually did an article on it for our Varmint Rifles & Cartridges magazine, I do love the 220 Swift and enjoyed working up loads with some of the newer powders available for it. A great cartridge no doubt and you'll get no argument from me on either of the points you made. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

      @@HandloaderTV Hey, thanks for the reply. What newer powders do you refer to? I read somewhere that CFE223 was not recommended even though it falls within the burn rate range of the tested older powders.

    I’m a 28 Nosler fan. I routinely get 3100 fps with 175. You should of used Retumbo in the 28, rather than H1000. I use V N570 in mine and it really goes like a shot cat🤣

    I was 3- years old when I first saw a German LUGER..7-years after WW2. Eversince..it has BECOME my Holy Grail. Finding a UNICORN 🦄 Is much probable from where l come from ( outside the USA)than finding a LUGER! Found one after a 33-years search! Have always followed Mr.Mike Venturino over the gun magazine publications. Feel his passing 😢.. will include him in my daily prayers..🙏 Incidentally,we are of the same age..
